Ice Hotels

A hotel carved from river ice, designed anew by artists every winter.

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Icehotel

The building is gone every spring and built again every winter. Icehotel stands in Jukkasjärvi, about two hundred kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. Since the early 1990s it has been rebuilt each season from Torne River ice and snow.

Artists are invited each year to design individual art suites, so no two seasons look the same. Inside, the temperature stays just below freezing. Guests sleep in thermal bags on reindeer hides, and heated rooms are a short walk away.

Icehotel 365, a permanent building cooled by solar power, keeps ice suites open through the summer. The seasonal hall melts back into the river each spring.
